MAFS ‘bride from hell’ Melinda Willis backpedals on ‘awful’ remarks about her husband – and insists her arrogant persona is just a ‘protective guard’

MAFS bride Melinda Willis has been slammed for her ‘awful’ comments about her groom Layton Mills’ appearance – including saying he is ‘punching’ above his weight.

And in a stunning about-turn, the Brisbane beautician, 31, now says these remarks were simply sarcasm and a way of ‘protecting’ herself from getting hurt.

She told Fitzy & Wippa on Monday: ‘I feel like when you hear these things come out of someone’s mouth… it’s kind of a protective guard, you know?

‘It’s like I’m freaking out [and] I need to just cover this with sarcasm so people don’t see me freaking out right now.’

Viewers branded Melinda ‘awful’ and ‘pretentious’ after she described herself as a ‘9.5 [out of 10] on a bad day’ before saying she would ‘swipe left’ on her husband.

But after her wedding aired on Sunday night, she said she is confident she can redeem herself and hopes her sarcastic personality ‘grows on people’.

Melinda hired a cinema for her family and friends to watch the episode, and she admitted they were shocked by some of her comments.

‘Everyone was quite shocked,’ she told Nova FM radio hosts Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald and Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli.

‘But then then they did [understand] the sarcastic sense of humor that I have – like, people know me – whereas a lot of these [viewers are] going to take some time to get to know me and appreciate my sarcasm that at first feels a bit brutal.

‘But I think I’ll grow on people.’

When asked if her mean comments about Layton were ‘a front’, Melinda said they were.

She told Fitzy & Wippa on Monday: 'I feel like when you hear these things come out of someone's mouth... it's kind of a protective guard, you know?'

‘Yeah, it’s just a little front and, you know, the walls are so high, like, Layton has a lot of climbing to do, but I think he climbs pretty well,’ she said.

Melinda added that despite the negative comments she received from viewers about how she treated Layton, she is confident her edit will improve later in the season.

‘I’ve been myself from the beginning to end, and you’re going to see that not change. And even though my trust issues and walls and everything are so heavy in the first episode, they carry on but you start to see [feelings develop],’ she said.

‘So it’s a blessing in disguise, it’s a good thing and it helps me call out a few people that need to be called out and it helps me get to the bottom of it and not be so quick to just accept everyone.

‘It’s kind of my motto was like, “Guilty until proven innocent.”‘
